NAMIBIA VOWS TO GRAB FARMS FROM WHITE FARMERS.

Okahandja, NAMIBIA:
Vibrant rows of neatly lined plants grow on a patch once trampled by the cattle of a large commercial farm run by a family of German descent in Namibia.

From that 2,400 square-meter rectangle of sand in the northern Otjozondjupa region, Kornelius Hamasab, 69, now produces spinach, onions and tomatoes.

Hamasab is among the 16 percent of black Namibians owning arable land in the semi-desert southwest African nation.

White Namibians, who are descended from former colonizers Germany and South Africa and make up six percent of the population, own 70 percent of the land.

"It doesn't seem right to me,"
said Hamasab, who acquired his land as compensation five years after the farm downsized into a guesthouse in 2000 and laid off its staff.

"The government should do something about it,"
he added, while his family picked and rinsed collared greens to be sold in the capital Windhoek, 150 kilometers away.

Namibia adopted a "willing-buyer, willing-seller" approach to land reform after independence from South Africa in 1990.

Farmers wishing to sell their business must first offer it to the state, which parcels it into smaller plots and redistributes to "previously disadvantaged Namibians".

That strategy has done little to redress the imbalance, however, prompting President Hage Geingob to call for a more muscular approach.

"The willing-buyer, willing-seller principle has not delivered results,"
Geingob told a land conference last year, adding that the "status-quo should not be allowed to continue".

Geingob has since demanded constitutional amendments to allow for the forceful expropriation of white-owned commercial farms with "fair compensation".

His proposal echoed controversial plans in neighboring South Africa to expropriate land without compensation.

It also brought back memories of land seizures in Zimbabwe in 2003, when thousands of white farmers were chased off their properties.

Helmut Halenke's grandfather Otto left the German state of Bavaria in 1908 and sailed thousands of miles to Namibia, where he bought farmland.

Otto's investment grew into a successful family-run beef farm and game hunting spot for tourists, and is now owned by his 41-year-old great grandson.

Squinting across a parched stretch of bushland seared by an ongoing drought, Halenke, 67, said he doubted Namibia's cash-strapped government would come after the property anytime soon.
"There are a lot of farms on the market at this stage,"
he said.

"The problem is the government has no money and they can't buy these farms."

Namibia's commercial farmers union estimates that about eight million hectares of land have been offered to the government since independence. Only three million were purchased.

"The white community is selling their land,"
said Bernardus Swartbooi, a former deputy land minister who registered his own party after a spat with government last year.

"It's not as if they are keeping their land as was the case in Zimbabwe."

Swartbooi ran for president in a general election last month under his Landless People's Movement (LPM), which has vowed to redress historic land ownership imbalances.

The LPM came third with 4.9 percent of the vote.

He accused the government of using land reform to empower a "small elite".

"Most of those that they want to resettle are their friends,"
Swartbooi told AFP.

"The poorest of the poor... have not been able to enjoy the full benefit of land reform."

Namibian government representatives declined several AFP requests for an interview.

Analysts say land issues resurfaced in the run-up to the election as a way of diverting attention from economic hardship.

"It has always been a very emotive topic for Namibians,"
said Dietrich Remmert from Namibia's Institute for Public Policy Research.

"With the current economic conditions being very bad, that comes to the fore."

Geingob, who has been re-elected for another five year term, has pledged to redistribute 43 percent of arable land by 2020 to previously disadvantaged Namibians.

Halenke, like many, fears this could cripple agricultural production if not "done in the right way".

"You cannot take a man from under a tree... and put him on a farm,"
said Halenke.
"You must enable people first."

He recalled the case of Ongombo West, a thriving commercial flower farm that went idle after it was redistributed to low-income families in 2005.

"Even the ministers have ..farm(s) but there is no proper production,"
noted Halenke.
"They think it's easy (but) farming is not for sissies."

Hamasab is all too familiar with the back-breaking labor it takes to profit from Namibia's meager soils.

He was also supported by his former employer and received advice from German agricultural experts.

CUBA CLAIMS CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER IS FIDEL CASTRO'S SON.

The suicide note left by Fidel Castro’s eldest son has rocked the Cuban nation this week, with the most astonishing revelation being the claim that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was his half-brother and the son of the late Fidel Castro. The handwritten note left by Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 68, the eldest of Fidel Castro’s children, appears to confirm the longstanding rumor in Cuba that Fidel Castro fathered Justin Trudeau after a public tryst with Margaret Trudeau in 1970. “ Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning ,”  Cubadebate website reported. The death of the high-profile government nuclear scientist, also known as “Fidelito”, or Little Fidel, because of how much he looked like his father, stunned the nation, however it is his “ explosive ” suicide note that has set tongues wagging in Havana. LETHOTO'S PRIME MINISTER FACES IMPEACHMENT MOTION OVER HIS WIFE'S ACT.

Lethoto Prime Minister Tom Thabane & The first Lady   Maesaiah Thabane. Maseru, LETHOTO: Lesotho's Prime Minister Thomas Thabane is facing a motion of no confidence for allegedly allowing his wife to meddle in government affairs, as political in-fighting rocks his ruling party and threatens the breakdown of his coalition government.  The motion was filed in parliament this week by a member of Thabane's own ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC), raising the possibility he will call snap elections in the tiny mountainous southern African kingdom.  "We hereby move a motion that this honourable house has no confidence in a government of Lesotho led by the Prime Minister Thomas Motsoahe Thabane,"  read a motion filed by ABC's Motebang Koma and seconded by the main opposition Democratic Congress deputy leader, Motlalentoa Letsosa. Parliament was adjourned on Monday with no date fixed for it to sit again. While the motion did not outline reasons fo

WHY CHINA'S DOG-MEAT MARKET HAS EXPANDED.

Every year during the summer solstice, a dog-eating festival takes place in Yulin, a city in the southern Chinese province of Guangxi. This year’s event ended with the usual controversy. Photographs of dogs being fried or treated cruelly went viral.  The Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival, as it is called, was abruptly canceled last week. Animal-rights activists and American congressmen demanded that China ban the eating of dogs and cats, as Taiwan did in April. Yulin’s local government took modest steps to restrain or hide some of the more contentious activities, such as selling dogs in food markets. Still, the festival was packed. Why has the controversial culinary habit become so popular in China? Contrary to cliché, dog meat has not always been a common item in the Chinese diet.  Unlike in the West, eating dogs has never been taboo, but it appears to have been rare in the past. Government accounts single out butchers who sold dog meat, suggesting it was unusu

PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA'S SON INSULTS EX-PRESIDENT ZUMA'S SON.

President Cyril Ramaphosa's son Tumelo has caused a social media flurry by calling former president Jacob Zuma's son Duduzane a "fool" in a bragging post on Instagram. Yesterday, Ramaphosa's spokeswoman Khusela Diko said Tumelo was a "grown man" who had to answer for himself for his actions. "The president, however, finds such behaviour extremely unfortunate and distasteful and not in keeping with the values he espouses or the manner in which he would expect anyone to conduct themselves." Tumelo, in a brief video posted on his account this week, which was later deleted, took a dig at the son of his father's predecessor after arriving at a Dubai hotel. The video, which had already been saved and was re-posted and retweeted several times by some Instagram and Twitter users, sparked debate. Some users questioned the lack of outrage at Tumelo's remarks and comments, with others speculating on what would have happene

However, she eventually became disillusioned and began seriously pursuing basketball, playing in the Western Australia Basketball League (WABL). But this path was derailed in 2015 when she suffered a serious knee injury. During her rehab, she started posting short videos online, and their popularity quickly ballooned. Now, she has amassed a huge following online and still regularly shares videos of basketball trick-shots. She's also making way more money than she used to, so perhaps that knee injury wasn't so unfortunate after all. Speaking to Perth Now, she said:

HOW CHINA 'HUMILIATES' MUSLIMS IN THE XINJIANG PROVINCE.

From  THE ECONOMIST . This article appeared in the China section of the print edition under the headline : "One belt, one roadblock" Chinese officials describe the far western province of Xinjiang as a “core area” in the vast swathe of territory covered by the country’s grandiose “Belt and Road Initiative” to boost economic ties with Central Asia and regions beyond. They hope that wealth generated by the scheme will help to make Xinjiang more stable—for years it has been plagued by separatist violence which China says is being fed by global jihadism. But the authorities are not waiting. In recent months they have intensified their efforts to stifle the Islamic identity of Xinjiang’s ethnic Uighurs, fearful that any public display of their religious belief could morph into militancy. Xinjiang’s 10m Uighurs (nearly half of its population) have long been used to heavy-handed curbs: a ban on unauthorised pilgrimages to Mecca, orders to students not to fast durin
