GERMANY INSTALLS CABLES OVER HIGHWAY TO POWER HYBRID TRUCKS.

A stretch of a prominent Germany highway just got a high-tech upgrade: overhead power lines — like the ones you only see over rail tracks — that can power hybrid trucks. The German government announced that a 6-mile (10 km) stretch of the autobahn got the upgrade, a test that could pave the way for a new carbon neutral strategy to transport goods. The system, developed by German conglomerate Siemens in 2012, allows hybrid trucks to charge their batteries while traveling at speeds of up to 56 mph (90 km/h). Image: Siemens. Similar stretches of electric highways have been built in Sweden and the United States. Other solutions for charging electric vehicles while on-the-go include rails built into the asphalt . Electrifying truck transportation could also save a tonne of fuel: 20,000 euros' worth for every truck traveling 62,000 miles (100,000 km), according to Siemens’ website . ZIMBABWE UPROAR AS 10 ROADS NAMED AFTER PRESIDENT MNANGAGWA.

Harare, ZIMBABWE: Zimbabweans have reacted with disbelief to news that the government has approved plans to rename major roads and buildings after "national heroes" - including 10 streets named after President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Many of those honoured fought in the 1970s guerrilla war against white-minority rule and went on to become prominent figures in independent Zimbabwe. Other African leaders such as Congo's Patrice Lumumba, Jomo Kenyatta and Abdel Gamal Nasser are to have roads named after them, along with international leaders such as Cuba's Fidel Castro, Leonid Brezhnev of the former Soviet Union and China's Mao Zedong. Many Zimbabweans took to social media to express concern that the cabinet spent time discussing the renaming of roads and buildings when the country was in a dire economic crisis. A former deputy prime minister in the inclusive government of 2009 to 2013, Prof Arthur Mutambara, told TimesLIVE that this was “a move...

Adis Ababa, ETHIOPIA: Pupils at state-run junior schools in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, are to receive free school meals from the start of the new academic year in October. Zelalem Mulatu, deputy of the Addis Ababa City Education Bureau speaking to BBC said‘‘We are planning to feed more than 300,000 students.” He said the city administration was expanding a scheme that had been feeding 70,000 pupils. It is part of efforts to stop students at state-run schools from dropping out of education. In July it was announced that all primary school pupils in Addis Ababa would be getting free uniforms and free exercise books from October. Many students at publicly funded primary schools come from low income families. “This scheme will enhance student’s active learning,” Mr Zelalem said. “It will also be an incentive for children to come to school as well as an incentive for the parents to send their children to school.” He said the initiative would al...
