ANGOLA EX-PRESIDENT'S SON ARRESTED FOR US$1.5 BILLION CORRUPTION CASE.

Jose Filomeno dos Santos.

Luanda, ANGOLA:
The son of Angola's former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos was taken into custody in connection with a US$1.5 billion corruption case, a state prosecutor told the AFP.

Jose Filomeno dos Santos, nicknamed Zenu, the former head of Angola’s sovereign wealth fund, Fundo Soberano de Angola (FSDEA) was in March charged with fraud over an alleged illegal transfer of $500 million while in his former position.

Another former fund manager, Angolan-Swiss businessman Jean-Claude Bastos de Morais, is also under investigation.

Jean-Claude Bastos de Morais is a Swiss-Angolan entrepreneur who has founded and led several businesses over the course of his career.
Among these are Quantum Global Group, an international investment group with a particular focus on Africa and Banco Kwanza Invest, Angola’s first investment bank.

“Given the complexity and seriousness of the deeds and in order to guarantee an effective enquiry...the state prosecution service decided to apply a preventive detention measure to those accused” in the case, prosecutor-general Alvaro Da Silva
Joao said in a statement on Monday.

In 2013, the Sovereign Wealth Fund Instituteranked dos Santos number 26 out of the top 100 wealth fund chiefs in the world, one in “a new round of leaders managing sub-Saharan Africa’s sovereign wealth.”

Dos Santos was a former board member of Banco Kwanza Invest, an Angolan investment bank. He was appointed to the board of the $5 billion fund by his father, then president, six years ago.

After he was named in the Paradise Papers, the current president, Joao Lourenco, fired dos Santos. The former wealth fund chief was accused of investing Angola’s capital into ventures of personal interest via his friend’s firm, Quantum Global, without a competitive tender.

Dos Santos’ father, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, stepped down as his nation’s president last year after 38 years as head of state, citing no reason.

José Eduardo dos Santos  born on 28 August 1942 is an Angolan politician who served as President of Angola from 1979 to 2017. As President, José Eduardo dos Santos was also the commander in chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and President of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the party that has ruled Angola since it gained independence in 1975. He was the second-longest-serving president in Africa, surpassed only by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who took power less than two months before dos Santos.

After taking office, Lourenco swiftly began to disassemble his predecessor’s empire, removing Isabel dos Santos - the president’s daughter - from her top position at Sonangol, the state oil giant, and removing Zenu from the wealth fund.

Angola is the second largest oil producer in Africa, with production contributing about 50 percent of the nation’s GDP and around 92 percent of its exports, according to OPEC. Despite its wealth, an estimated 48 percentof its population is classified as poor.

The country’s main opposition party, UNITA, celebrated Zenu’s detention and praised the president for “honouring his promises.”
“Angola must become a normal country...and a democratic state,” a party spokesman told the AFP.

The African nation is ranked 167 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index. The country received a score of 19 out of 100, with 0 being the most corrupt. The average score in sub-Saharan Africa is 32.

SOUTH AFRICA EFF PARTY LEADER SUFFERS A FATAL DEFEAT IN HIGH COURT.

Pretoria, SOUTH AFRICA: It was a dull and disappointing day , after the EFF leader Julius Malema’s legal challenge to have the Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956 declared unconstitutional, was on Tuesday removed from the roll in the Gauteng High Court Pretoria. The matter was on the opposed motion roll and scheduled to be heard this week, but Judge Sulet Potterill removed it so that the parties could approach Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba for another court date. This is because arguments are expected to run into more than one court day and a special judge had to be allocated to hear the matter. Malema faces criminal charges of allegedly contravening the Riotous Assemblies Act after calling for land invasions. In 2014 during the party’s elective conference in Bloemfontein, Malema told his party members that they should occupy the land. QUEEN ELIZABETH WANTED PRINCE HARRY HIS WIFE TO LIVE IN AFRICA.

London, ENGLAND: The Queen had reportedly put together a secret plan for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to move to South Africa before they stepped down as senior royals. In his new book Battle of Brothers, biographer Robert Lacey claims Her Majesty suggested the Sussexes take a year or two out in Johannesburg in 2019. The monarch knew how desperate the couple were for an "ordinary" existence and felt something similar to the years she spent in Malta in her youth could do them good. She had tasted "normal" life during her 'Malta Moments' between 1949 and 1951, alongside Prince Philip, who was serving as a naval officer on the Mediterranean island. The future Queen would often fly out to stay with the Duke of Edinburgh, setting her up well for returning home to her duty, explained Mr Lacey. Harry and Meghan are said to have been interested in the move to Africa, where their relationship had previously blossomed, or somewhere else in the Commonwealth. In the p...

MALARIA VACCINE PROVES HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN BURKINA FASO.

A vaccine against malaria has been shown to be highly effective in trials in Africa, holding out the real possibility of slashing the death toll of a disease that kills 400,000 mostly small children every year. The vaccine, developed by scientists at the Jenner Institute of Oxford University, showed up to 77% efficacy in a trial of 450 children in Burkina Faso over 12 months. The hunt for a malaria vaccine has been going on the best part of a century. One, the Mosquirix vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline, has been through lengthy clinical trials but is only partially effective, preventing 39% of malaria cases and 29% of severe malaria cases among small children in Africa over four years. It is being piloted by the World  Health  Organization in parts of Kenya, Ghana and Malawi. The Oxford vaccine is the first to meet the WHO goal of 75% efficacy against the mosquito-borne parasite disease. Larger trials are now beginning, involving 4,800 children in four countries. MAYWEATHER AND McGREGOR FIGHT DELAYED OVER PPV ISSUES.

The Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor main event Saturday night in Las Vegas will be delayed due to pay-per-view outages, sources told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. "Due to the overwhelming demand, capacity of cable systems around country are being overwhelmed. They are shutting down and rebooting some of these cable systems," Showtime executive vice president Stephen Espinoza told ESPN. It was unclear how many people were affected by the outages. Among the carries affected were Xfinity and Atlantic Broadband, but it was unclear the extent of those carriers' outages. UFC officials and WWE/IMG have not replied to ESPN's repeated requests for comment. UFC Fight Pass tweeted this earlier Saturday: Similar issues caused a delay in Mayweather's fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015. McGregor seemed unfazed by the delay, telling Showtime two hours before the fight that he would "paint a beautiful picture" against Mayweather. "I'm going to go out...

MINERS IN NAMIBIA DISCOVER SHIPWRECK LOADED $13 MILLION WORTH OF GOLD.

Image: Dieter Noli. Diamond miners working off the coast of Africa were beyond surprised when they discovered a 500-year-old shipwreck teeming with gold worth $13 million and other treasures. The ship, aptly named ‘Bom Jesus’ or ‘Good Jesus,’ was like a miracle to the miners. Bom Jesus was first identified and discovered by geologists working for the mining company De Beers in 2008. It was found off the coast of Namibia near Oranjemund. Image: Dieter Noli. According to experts, Bom Jesus is from the Golden era of Portuguese explorers who set sail in all directions in search of new lands to colonize. The ship left Lisbon in 1533 under the supervision of Sir Francisco de Noronha. But on its way to India, it mysteriously vanished. Before the discovery, the miners were draining an artificial salt lake. As the lake dried out, many lost ships were found at the bottom of the lake. Bom Jesus was among them, and it is considered the oldest of all ...

WHY CHINA'S DOG-MEAT MARKET HAS EXPANDED.

Every year during the summer solstice, a dog-eating festival takes place in Yulin, a city in the southern Chinese province of Guangxi. This year’s event ended with the usual controversy. Photographs of dogs being fried or treated cruelly went viral.  The Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival, as it is called, was abruptly canceled last week. Animal-rights activists and American congressmen demanded that China ban the eating of dogs and cats, as Taiwan did in April. Yulin’s local government took modest steps to restrain or hide some of the more contentious activities, such as selling dogs in food markets. Still, the festival was packed. Why has the controversial culinary habit become so popular in China? Contrary to cliché, dog meat has not always been a common item in the Chinese diet.  Unlike in the West, eating dogs has never been taboo, but it appears to have been rare in the past. Government accounts single out butchers who sold dog meat, suggesting it ...
