Harare, ZIMBABWE:
Former President Robert Mugabe's snub of National Heroes Acre might cause the Zimbabwe government fresh headaches with reports suggesting that one of the late former Vice President and liberation war hero Joshua Nkomo's sons Sibangilizwe is keen to have his father and mother's remains exhumed from the National Heroes Acre to be re-buried at his homestead in Kezi, Matabeleland South.
Sibangilizwe Nkomo speaking to Daily News said it was his father's wish to be buried next to his parents in Kezi. Sibangilizwe he was against the idea of Joshua Nkomo's burial at the National Heroes Acre but couldn't stop it because he was not as "powerful" as Grace Mugabe.
“I actually refused that he be buried at the Heroes Acre because he had told me he wanted to be buried at his homestead. I failed to achieve this because most probably I didn’t have as much power as Grace Mugabe."
We still have that wish to bury him next to his parents as he wanted. The nation must understand that should we decide as a family to remove his remains from the Heroes Acre, it will be because we are following his wishes."
It still not yet known whether Nkomo's other surviving child Thandiwe share the same sentiments. It is however expected that any move to exhume Joshua Nkomo's body will be met with fierce resistance from the government because if it happens many more families might decide to follow suit.
