Banjul, GAMBIA:
Fabián Salvioli , EU United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence’ has asked the government of The Gambia to legalize same-sex marriage, arguing that laws that criminalized the practice are discriminatory.
Homosexuality is illegal in The Gambia since 1888, the least act of homosexuality carries a minimum of 14 years imprisonment and “aggravated homosexual” conducts attracting “Life imprisonment.”
The EU in May last year, pledged a sum of 1.4 billion Euros to the Barrow administration. However, must of the pledges have not been fulfilled so far; as revealed to the National Assembly by the Finance Minister, Mr. Mambury Njie.
Currently, South Africa is the only African country that legally recognizes same-sex marriage.
Continuing his argument, Fabián Salvioli pointed out to international treaties that The Gambia is a signatory to, adding that,
“If the decriminalization continues, The Gambia has to appear before these bodies to receive very clear observations from the international community in that regard,”
He landed.
Former autocratic Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh was known for his strong stand against the LGBT community and has threatened to “cut the throats” of individuals found in the act.
