An Egyptian lawyer has sparked worldwide condemnation after he said it was his “patriotic and national duty” to sexually harass and rape young girls who wear revealing clothes.

Prominent conservative Nabih al-Wahsh said that if a woman wore ripped jeans she deserved to be sexually assaulted and punished.

In a TV debate on channel Al-Assema he said: “Are you happy when you see a girl walking down the street with half of her behind showing?

I say that when a girl walks about like that, it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her. Girls must respect themselves so others respect them. Protecting morals is more important than protecting borders.”

The awful comments were made during a TV talk show called “Infrad.” The five member panel were debating a draft law on prostitution and “inciting debauchery” when Nabih al-Wahsh made the disgusting comments.

The head of the National Council for Women Doctors, Maya Mursi said Mr al-Wahsh’s shocking comments were a ‘flagrant call’ for rape.

She stated that she was shocked they were made by a lawyer who should be defending people’s rights and freedoms.
The council will complain to the attorney general, Ms Mursi said.
